Strawberry breeding<\/h2>\n

What would a company be today without good design and edge-cutting innovation?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

We, at Geoplant vivai, have already wondered that a few years ago. Back in 1992, the CEO and founder of the company, Mr. Secondo Danesi together with his supportive wife Mrs. Adriana realised that he would need to create his own personal variety of strawberries to be promoted and offered to his clients, from farmers and dealers to salesmen and co-operatives. He would never give up on his idea and that\u2019s when he decided to promote and establish the very first private research center aiming to study genetic improvement of strawberry cropped in Romagna territory: it was just there, in Cesena, where the company New Fruits was born and later, it moved to Ravenna.<\/p>\n

The 90s crossed a very important line for the company located in Savarna, Romagna countryside; many cultivars being produced at that time weren\u2019t edge-cutting any longer and their demand was slowly decreasing. The reason behind this is probably due to newly patented varieties that were being introduced in the market but couldn\u2019t be reproduced by Geoplant that was unlicensed at that time. Mr Danesi figured that sooner or later he would have lost many of his clients; to avoid this to happen, he committed himself to give a new life and future to his 10-year-old company, founded in 1982, so that to ensure a workplace to his employees and collaborators who had always believed faithfully in his project.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″ offset=”vc_hidden-xs”][vc_single_image image=”736″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css_animation=”appear”][\/vc_column][vc_column][vc_column_text]Thanks to the strawberry breeding licensed by New Fruits, ie. the licensor, our plant nursery has increased and traded market-leading varieties for years. Varieties like Alba, Asia, Roxana e Syria, whose demand remains highly stable in European and Italian markets, and recently born ones like Tea, Olympia e FragolAurea, have swept off the clients feet thanks to their taste, high yield and adaptability. Needless to say, this is a clear proof that shows Mr. Danesi\u2019s willingness and ability to perfectly combine quantity and quality.<\/p>\n

Started in 2010, Geoplant\u2019s breeding is a controlled crossing technique that replaces the New Fruits traditional one thanks to the use of breeders instead of bees. In the last few years, this method has given birth to Talia, a late-ripening June-bearing strawberry of excellent quality, and to Auge, an ever\u00ad-bearing whose yield is pretty high.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” content_placement=”middle” css=”.vc_custom_1666789995600{margin-bottom: 35px !important;background-color: #f7f7f7 !important;}”][vc_column][vc_row_inner content_placement=”middle”][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”727″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css_animation=”appear”][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”738″ img_size=”200×200″ alignment=”center” css_animation=”appear”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Peach and apricot breeding (M.A.S.P.E.S. project)<\/h2>\n

In 2018 Geoplant Vivai joined the project called M.A.S.P.E.S. together with two other important regional nurseries and the growers belonging to New Plant. The project is coordinated by CRPV with the technical support of UNIMI. In the following years, other important national companies such as Granfrutta Zani and Agribologna joined the project, and recently IPS signed an important agreement for the development of the selection results abroad.<\/p>\n

The M.A.S.P.E.S project aims to introduce new varieties of peaches, nectarines and apricots of the highest quality. The most important and original aspects the project comprises of, are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • all the members of the project, both internal and external, are samples of all players in the fruit supply chain, able to mix together years of expertise in terms of research, production, nursery and variety development. So far, this is undoubtfully the first and only case in Europe where this has been made possible;<\/li>\n
  • the project uses highly innovative breeding methods and selection techniques such as the use of molecular markers and seedmass selection of seedlings;<\/li>\n
  • the project main goals are extremely interesting: very high taste quality of the varieties, presence of Sharka (apricot) resistance markers, adaptability and high yield. The selection is carried out in different production areas and screened by technical experts from the world of research, production and nurseries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Pear breeding<\/h2>\n

    Started in 2009 our breeding programme on pear trees has developed around well defined ideotypes i.e. fruit with coloured skin (red or pink) on at least 50-60% of their surface area; pear x nashi hybrids, Erwinia-resistant selections.<\/p>\n
