Areko*

Areko is one of the new and most interesting varieties in the Kordia ripening period. It’s an excellent alternative to Kordia for both continental and Mediterranean climates, with large (>30 mm) medium-sized fruits, a Kordiform shape, and excellent flavor. Areko is characterized by its late flowering, like Kordia, but is more rustic and productive.

Ferrovia Variety

Ferrovia is an historical and traditional late ripening cherry cultivar, particularly widespread in Italy and Central Europe where it is called by different names. It has a very good yield and it is compatible with both traditional rootstocks like Colt or MaxMa, and high-density ones like Gisela5 and Gisela6-based. Fruit features: medium size and texture, very dark skin. Fruit flavour: well-balanced flavour, almost sour. Ferrovia is a perfect pollinator for other late varieties, such as Kordia and Regina.

Henriette Variety

Henriette is a brand-new late ripening variety of cherry tree with German origin. This variety has a very good and constant yield, especially in those areas that are particularly suited for growing late ripening cherries– e.g. the Alpine arc; its fruit is heart-shaped with a very long stem. L’epoca di fioritura è tardiva e ottimi impollinatori sono Kordia, Regina, Ferrovia, Carmen e Areko. Thanks to its features, Henriette is the perfect competitor to be flanked by Kordia, or even to replace it, specifically in all those areas where late frosts and bad weather conditions may cause major production losses to Kordia, which is still the market leader of late ripening varieties.

Royal Helen* Variety

Royal Helen is a self-fertile variety, very late and of exceptional fruit quality. Royal Helen has trees vigorous with erect habit of growth and the fruits are located mainly on the dards. The fruit is rounded with stalk medium-long. The size of fruits is very big (medium caliber around of 33-34 mm) with an average weight of 14-15 g. The consistency of the fruit is very high and thanks to a very thick stalk it gives it excellent resistance to handling and a long shelf-life. The fruit is rounded with stalk medium-long (40-45 mm) and thick. The organoleptic characteristics are excellent with 19-20° Brix and very low acidity. Royal Elen is quite sensitive to cracking so we suggest to cover the orchards with plastic film. It’s a self-fertile variety suitable for every kind of plantations (High-medium or low density).

Regina Variety

Regina is a late-season variety mainly used in combination with Kordia, Ferrovia or Carmen. The tree has high vigour with spreading well-branched growth habit and with fruiting mainly located on dards. The fruit has dark-red colour, cordiform shape, large size and long peduncle. The flesh has high firmness. Excellent uniformity of ripening with low susceptibility to cracking. The taste is good. Excellent vegetative-productive behaviour on dwarfing rootstocks. Regina has an excellent tolerance to spring cold returns.

Tamara* Variety

Tamara is an excellent late-season variety chracterised by large size (average calibre >32 mm), high weight (>12 g) and excellent sugar content (>18°Brix. The fruit has high firmness with light-red flesh and bright dark-red fruit skin. The peduncle is medium-long. The fruit shape is depressed-cordiform. The taste is as excellent as the flesh firmness. The tree is vigorous with semi-erect growth habit. Flowering is medium-early. Good productive behaviour on dwarfing rootstocks. Tamara is not subject to rain cracking and it is recommended to pollinate it with other early flowering varieties such as Burlat, Vera and Lapins.

Kordia Variety

Kordia is one of the reference varieties in the mid-late season. The fruit is well-known and appreciated for the cordate-elongated shape and for the very long peduncle. The skin colour is dark-red. The flesh is firm with good organoleptic traits. Excellent ripening uniformity and fruit keeping quality. The tree has medium-high vigour with spreading growth habit, well-branched, with fruiting mainly placed on dards. Grafting on weak or dwarfing rootstocks (Gisela 6, Gisela 5, etc.) is recommended. Kordia is a non-self-fertile variety that requires the pollination of other late flowering varieties such as: Regina, Carmen e Ferrovia.

Frisco* Variety

Frisco is an early-season variety, very interesting for the high yield and the large fruit calibre. The tree has high vigour with semi-spreading growth habit. The start of production is rapid also on medium-vigorous rootstocks. The fruit has large size (on average 28-30 mm), reniform shape with long peduncle. The fruit skin is deep-red coloured. The flesh is very firm with high sugar content (on average 18°Brix). Medium-high resistance to handlings and cracking.

Carmen* Variety

Carmen is a medium-early ripening cherry variety that has been popular and popular for several years. Carmen has trees with low vigor and spreading growth habit. The fruit has very large size (more than 32-34 mm of mean calibre) with very high weight, medium-long peduncle and cordate shape. The color is deep bright red. The flesh is medium firm with good taste and low acidity. The yield is good and constant. This variety is suitable for both medium-low density (Colt, CAB6P) and high density (Gisela 5 and 6) plants. Very late flowering makes it a perfect pollinator for the Kordia, Regina and Ferrovia varieties.

Royal Tioga Variety

Royal Tioga is a Californian variety spread in Europe by IPS. This variety of cherry is very interesting because it is self-fertile, the fruit is crunchy and slightly marbled wine red in color. Ripening of fruits in open field is Burlat time but cultivated in warm areas or in tunnel could be anticipated respect of Burlat till two weeks. This characteristic makes it very sensitive to cold returns but if grown under tunnels or in particularly suitable areas it can allow a significant advance of ripening compared to Burlat (up to 12-15 days before the first detachment). Fruits size is 28 mm and colouration in bright red. Royal Tioga is less sensitive to rain cracking respect of big parts of early varieties.
