Varieties, species and plants suitable for cold climates

Cold areas or regions with continental climate are perfect for later flowering varieties, due to their need of colder temperatures. Late flowering and cold temperatures are essential for the plant to protect itself against late frosts that may jeopardise its flowering and consequently its fruiting.

For example, in case of a late April frost the varieties with fruitlets, that have recently bloomed or where flowering is still ongoing may suffer very serious damage even at temperatures between of -2 / -3° C.

Under these specific conditions, the perfect plants are undoubtfully pome fruits, such as apple and pears, strawberries, European plums like Stanley, different ranges of cherry tree from the self-fertile to the late blooming one, and finally some apricot varieties, e.g. Albinova and Farbela.

Generally, it is better you avoid growing early flowering varieties and all those featuring a particularly cold-sensitive flowering apparatus such as peaches, nectarines and Sino-Japanese plum varieties.
